Activities and Projects Special Projects
Listed below are on-going projects in which the Fargo Lions Club is involved: Conservancy Park: The Lions Conservancy Park is located where Rose Creek joins the Red River of the North. The topography of this area was formed over thousands of years by the receding glaciers of the Ice Age, the weight of Lake Agassiz and the ongoing cycles of flooding, erosion, and drought. Since the arrival of humans, this area was no doubt used by nomadic native peoples as they spent summers here and wintered farther south. Settlers arrived and eventually homes were built here, families raised, gardens tended, and trees and shrubs were planted. In 1997, the cycle of flooding reclaimed this land as the Red RIver "backed up" into Rose Creek. The homes that were here were removed and the land lay devoid of human use for a time. On a walk with his wife, Jan, Fargo Lions Club member, Mike Benson was inspired to somehow tell the story of this wondrous piece of land. Mike approached the Fargo Lions CLub to see if they would be interested in sponsoring a park at this site. The club created a partnership with the Fargo Park District and RIverkeepers to conceive of a proper use for this space. Together with a myriad of partners to advise and assist them, they drew up plans for conserving this land as an educational resource for the people of the area. Thus was born the Lions Conservancy Park.
